'Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows' DLC coming soon, includes new Challenge Mode & playable character

After a long wait, developer Yacht Club Games has finally announced in their blog some good news for all "Shovel Knight" players. The first DLC expansion of the game will be released on Sept. 17 to all platforms. The latest expansion update called "Plague of Shadows" will be made available in all regions.

According to IGN, the only prerequisite to receive the update is to complete the original game and/or have a special code that is given by the studio in case players moved to another platform or lost a saved game. And players will not be shelling out a single penny as it will all come for free. Gamespot noted that the free update is brought by the achievement of one of the game's stretch goals.

The upcoming "Plague of Shadows" expansion has two main features - the addition of a new playable character and a new Challenge mode. The players will now be able to take the role of the Plague Knight which is one of the bosses from the base game. A modified version of the original campaign will be introduced and players will go through it meeting along the way new objectives, areas, feats, enemies, paths and of course, bosses. The changes are in line with the change in protagonist.
