Showtime Renews 'Ray Donovan' for Season 6; EP Discusses Coming Changes

Showtime has renewed "Ray Donovan" for a sixth season, but fans are going to see some changes come into play.

According to Deadline, season 6 will consist of 12 episodes and will be moving to New York City. Production will commence early next year.

"We so appreciate that David Hollander is never satisfied with the status quo, and his creative plan for moving the show to New York reflects his relentless ambition for this series," Showtime Networks president of programming Gary Levine said.

But, the decision to move to the Big Apple was not made hastily. Executive producer and showrunner David Hollander revealed to TVLine that they had already made up their mind about it "about a year ago." He also told the media outlet the reason behind the move.

"It forces us to reinvent ourselves," he said, explaining that they did not want the show to become stale. "So we made the decision to consciously change the dynamic and direction of the show."

Hollander also touched upon Ray's (Liev Schreiber) alcoholism, confirming that the titular character definitely has a problem with abusing the substance. However, that does not necessarily mean that season 6 will see him dive into any AA meetings and try to get sober. Fans should also not expect to see Ray driving around the city in a fancy car, as Hollander revealed that he will be traveling more on foot in the Big Apple.

"There are going to be a lot of changes," he previewed. "The silhouette of Ray Donovan will, in many ways, remain untouched. But there's also an opportunity to have him inhabit the city in a way [that regular New Yorkers] truly inhabit it."

Additionally, the move to New York will be a sort of fresh start for Ray, who lost his wife Abby (Paula Malcomson) in season 5. The new setting will certainly open doors to new possible storylines.

For now, fans can tune in to the season 5 finale of "Ray Donovan," which will air on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 9 p.m. EDT on Showtime.
