'Shrek 5': Writer Hints at 'Big Reinvention'; Script is Done

One of the creative minds behind the still-in-development "Shrek 5" movie has recently teased that the next installment will get a "big reinvention" in terms of how the franchise was narrated before, while reiterating that the film's script has been finished.

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Michael McCullers was asked how some of his projects are going. McCullers was pretty direct in saying that "Shrek 5" is in the pipeline of DreamWorks Animation.

"I finished that script which I really, really, really love. It's really personal to me. It's got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can't really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they're particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level," McCullers further explained to THR.

McCullers, who also worked on the Alec Baldwin-starring film "Boss Baby," said that reinvention was needed but they had to think of a new approach in telling the stories of some of the beloved characters from DreamWorks Animation franchises such as "Shrek."

It can also be recalled that before the former DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg left the company last year, he noted during his speech at a surprise tribute in CineEurope that they have a "fantastic script" for the "Shrek 5" film.

As for what to expect from the reinvented narrative, fans can always try to revisit what happened before "Shrek 4" ended. Screen Rant recalled that Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and Shrek (Mike Myers) had several baby ogres and the report speculates the story might pick up several years after where those babies have somehow grown enough to tell the "Shrek 5" story from their perspective.

In the last four movies, the story revolved around an enchanted fairy world. When McCullers said the franchise had been reinvented, Screen Rant also considered the possibility that Fiona and Shrek might be exploring the real world in the fifth movie installment.

"Shrek 5" will open in theaters sometime in 2019.
