'Skullgirls' Coming to iOS and Android

"Skullgirls," the hit fighting game for PlayStation and Xbox, will be getting a release for the Android and iOS in spring of this year. The mobile version will be developed by Hidden Variable Studios and published by Line.

Hidden Variable, better known as the producer for number puzzle "Threes," will be developing the fighter game for the smartphone platforms.

Engadget covered the studio's earlier announcement made in July of last year, when it first set the game's release date by the end of 2016. The studio teased a new role-playing game (RPG) aspect for the tag team fighting game in its initial reveal. Through the course of fighting opponents in the story mode, various upgrades, equipment and other customization options can be collected or bought for the characters in the roster.

The "Skullgirls" mobile version has been said to require a mobile device with a "little extra moxie" for the best gameplay experience. Since last year's announcement, a lot of newer smartphone models have come out that it would probably be safe to say that the game would run on the current generation of devices with no problems.

A closed beta of the game has been ongoing on a per-application basis since last year.

The new version of "Skullgirls" being developed for the mobile will be a more simplified and streamlined version of the classic fighting game, in such a way that makes it easy to play on a smartphone. A "Fight Assist Mode" will be added that will automate the fights for players who prefer to focus on the RPG aspect of the new game.

Since then, the launch for "Skullgirls" has encountered a bit of a delay and has been pushed backed to spring 2017, when it would make a limited soft launch. While an exact date for the official launch has not been set so far, fans remain optimistic that it would not be too long before the game comes out for the Android and iOS.
