'Slender Man' Movie in the Works, Release Date in 2017; Screen Gems to Bring Supernatural Character to the Big Screen
After it was rumored that the horror anthology "American Horror Story" would adapt the Creepy Pasta horror "Slender Man," Comicbook.com has confirmed that the horror character will be brought to the big screen as Screen Gems is producing its live-action feature slated for a 2017 release.
The entertainment website reports that the movie about the character already has a script penned by David Birke. Cameras may start grinding for the said Slender Man movie this fall.
The Slender man character got incarnated via a Something Awful forum contest wherein participants were tasked to transform regular photos into something supernatural. Eric Knudsen submitted an entry that featured an extremely tall and faceless man in black suit standing behind two young girls.
Many people have noted that the appearance of the character that Knudsen created bears a striking resemblance to The Gentlemen featured on the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series back then and "Doctor Who's" The Silence. However, according to Knudsen, Slender Man was inspired by the Tall Man featured in "Phantasm" films.
Slender Man is often depicted as a supernatural creature that abducts children and influence people to do evil things beyond their control. As the character doesn't have its own story cannon, it is but inevitable for the character's supernatural abilities to evolve in more ways than one depending on who adapts it. One of the most common beliefs about Slender Man is that he has long upper extremities that he uses in hypnotizing his victims.
Earlier this year, it was speculated that the upcoming season of "American Horror Story" will revolve around Slender Man character. However, as of this writing, there is no solid piece of information that can confirm whether this will really be the case once the horror anthology returns to FX by October this year.
Meanwhile, it is expected that the "Slender Man" movie will cause nightmares to its would-be watchers as Screen Gems is producing it. With the studio boasting of spine-chilling films, such as "The Mothman Prophecies," "Boogeyman," "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," and "Hostel," fans can expect to witness another horror film feature that will deprive them of a good night sleep and cause them paranoia.
