'Smash Bros.' Mod: Project M Abandons Development, PMDev Team Working On New Venture

The Project M development team has recently announced that they are no longer developing another release for the mod. The team behind the popular "Smash Bros." mod said they are busy working on a "new venture."

On Project M's official site, the team's farewell post is the only entry visitors will see. Download links and others are no longer available.

"We are ceasing development of Project M (effective immediately) and will be making no further releases as we turn our attention towards an entirely new venture," the Project M team writes in the post.

The team said the "difficult business decision" was made so they can focus on their work on "new projects, built from the ground up." Without revealing anything about their new venture, the team said they wanted to dedicate themselves to it fully so as to maintain the level of quality and professionalism the community has come to expect from them.

This sudden halt of Project M development saddened many of its fans, as well as gave rise to rumors. Most of these relate to possible legal actions, including a cease and desist order, from Nintendo that holds the copyright on the "Smash Bros." franchise.

"To clarify: We weren't contacted, issued a C&D, threatened or had legal action taken against us in any way, but we want it to stay that way," said the team's video game attorney, Ryan Morrison, on Twitter to settle rumors of Nintendo ordering a cease and desist order or otherwise taking legal action on the Project M development team.

As for the new venture, no one really knows what it could be. Everyone will have to wait for an announcement from the former Project M development team.

The Project M team modified "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" so that it recreated "Super Smash Bros." and "Super Smash Bros. Melee." The mod has been downloaded millions of times, and the Project M tribe grew from just a group of friends to an international community.
