SNES Classic Hits 2 Million Mark in Units Sold Worldwide
Looks like Nintendo's attempt at reviving another retro console will bring in tons of profit, as expected.
According to the gaming giant's latest Financial Briefing for Fiscal Year Ending March 2018, the company has already sold 2 million units of the popular SNES Classic console worldwide. A unit costs $80, which makes the milestone all the more impressive since the console was only launched in late September.
Nintendo explained that one of their main thrusts for reviving the famous console from the 1990s is to cater to old and new gamers alike. "The expectation is that the chance to interact with video games for those who either haven't done so in a long while or those who never have will lead to a greater appreciation for our newest gaming console, Nintendo Switch," Nintendo explained.
"The Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition will continue to ship moving forward," they added.
With the massive success of the SNES Classic, Gamespot noted that it has also led Nintendo to re-release the NES Classic Edition next year. "We are hoping that consumers eager to purchase this system will wait just a short while longer," Nintendo announced.
According to a TIME report, the NES Classic Edition sold over 2.3 million units, which eventually led to Nintendo experiencing problems in keeping up with the high demand. "We just didn't anticipate how incredible the response would be," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé back in April.
"Once we saw that response, we added shipments and extended the product for as long as we could to meet more of that consumer demand," Fils-Aimé added. To the surprise of the gaming public, the company discontinued production of the NES Classic in April. Fils-Aimé noted that their decision came about after refocusing in "key areas" and where their future as a company stands.
He also said that they have a lot of things going on for them and that their resources are not unlimited.
