SNES Classic Stocks News: GameStop Confirms Console Was Sold Out Within Minutes; More Supplies Expected 'Very Soon'
As expected, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System remake, which is now marketed as the SNES Classic Edition, sold out within minutes, according to GameStop. But the retailer is positive that more players can get their own unit "very soon."
Just like earlier launched remakes of Nintendo's classic consoles, the SNES rebirth is a hit. It also means that many gamers around the world were unable to acquire their unit of the throwback gaming device.
As for GameStop, Senior Vice President of Merchandising Bob Puzon confirmed to Siliconera that their supply of the SNES Classic Edition sold out in less than an hour.
In a statement, the GameStop executive said: "Nintendo has done it again! Customer demand for the SNES Classic was just like we expected. We sold out of our SNES Classic inventory within minutes in both our GameStop and ThinkGeek retail channels."
While this could be very disappointing to many, Puzon confirmed that there will still be another chance to line up and get the SNES Classic Edition. He added: "But customers shouldn't worry. We're getting more very soon. Once we do, our customers will be the first to know!"
Unfortunately, Nintendo still faced a wide supply shortage despite the promise of ramping up the production to meet the demands. To their credit, a report on Geek Wire said that Nintendo was indeed able to deliver 10 to 20 times more units of the SNES Classic Edition compared to how much they shipped for the NES Classic.
It also appears that the SNES Classic Edition sold out in a matter of minutes on other retailers, both online and in physical stores.
Geek Wire's Tim Ellis shared that as early as 6:50 a.m. last Sept. 29, as many as 90 people were already lined up outside a Target store in downtown Seattle hoping to get their SNES Classic units. Notably, that store only had 120 units available for the day.
Meanwhile, the exact time and date for when the second wave of SNES Classic Edition supplies are expected to arrive in stores has yet to announced.
At the time of release, the SNES Classic Edition was sold at $79.99 bundled with 21 games.
