Edward Snowden, Wikileaks Movie Release Date, Cast News: Oliver Stone, Nicholas Cage Join

Multi-awarded director Oliver Stone recently announced that he will direct the upcoming Edward Snowden biographical film which will be ready for release by December 2015. The film, to be titled "Snowden" will revolve around the life of the U.S. IT contractor who fled the U.S. after making "devastating revelations about the PRISM project to spy on the servers of Facebook, Apple, Yahoo!, Google and other sites" and other activities that the National Security Agency and other cohorts are continuously doing to gain access to mobile voice and data worldwide.

The movie will be the second one made about Snowden who is currently hiding in Russia according to a report in Silicon Republic. The first one was a documentary called "CitizenFour" made by Laura Poitras which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Picture in 2014.

"Snowden" will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, Lakeith Lee Stanfield as a co-worker at NSA and close friend of Snowden, Nicholas Cage as a former US intelligence officer and Timothy Olyphant as a CIA agent. Other confirmed cast members include Scott Eastwood, Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo, Rhys Ifans, Tom Wilkinson and Joely Richardson. Stone will work with Kieran Fitzgerald on the movie's script.

According a report in Christian Today, production for the film has already commenced this month in Munich, Germany. The script is said to be based on two books, Luke Harding's "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man" and "Time of the Octopus" authored by Snowden's Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena. Oliver Stone and his producing partner Moritz Borman bought film rights for both books.

Stone is known for his award-winning films such as "Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July," and "JFK." He has also had his share of biopics like that of Richard Nixon (titled "Nixon") and George W. Bush (titled "W.").
