Soberanes Fire Update [MAP] - Fire 10% Contained; Evacuations and One Death
Soberanes Fire now larger and fiercer, claims one life and threatens thousands. Evacuations for more areas released.
The Soberanes fire near the area of Big Sur has increased in size and intensity. The blaze has now destroyed more than 30 homes and has claimed the life of a bulldozer operator who was trying to contain the fire.
Hotter weather plus lower humidity threaten the area
Firefighters brace themselves as warmer weather and lower humidity threaten the area of Big Sur over the next days. Weather forecasters said that despite the break Wednesday, when the area was blessed with cooler temperatures, Thursday and Friday temperatures will again soar higher than 80 degrees. Along with warm temperatures, there will be low humidity and light winds that would again fan the blaze.

More properties destroyed, lives threatened
The Soberanes fire intensified over the past few days and so far it has destroyed 10 more outbuildings covering more than 37 square miles. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the fire is only 10% contained.
Aside from the bulldozer operator that died putting out the blaze, another ground firefighting crew was added to the numbers of those injured - he managed to escape injury as another bulldozer toppled over. He was working in a steep part of the terrain when the accident happened. The operator sustained only minor injuries.
The bulldozer that tumbled over is just one of the 60 bulldozers that are being used to contain the fire in the area. There are also aerial crews working till evening to combat the blaze.
Structures affected
Reports say that at least 2,000 structures and buildings were affected. One of the threatened areas is the Pacific Coast Highway known for its breathtaking views. The highway continued to allow motorists to pass but its views were replaced with dark thick clouds.
Evacuation orders expanded
As the fire threatened more homes and structures, evacuation orders has been raised in more areas near the blaze. Monterey County Sheriff's Office ordered new mandatory evacuations for residents found in Robinson Canyon Road from San Clemente Trail to White Rock Gun Club, south of San Clemente Trail from Robinson Canyon Road to Rancho San Clemente Gate House and the area of Arroyo Sequoia Road.
Stubborn residents
Cal Fire Chief Ken Pimlott said that the area is very dangerous and they cannot provide a timeline for the blaze. Firefighters say that the outcome will largely depend on the weather. Pimlott also gave a warning to residents that do not follow evacuation orders. Pimlott said that they are risking their lives. He said that wildfires claim lives because some residents are too stubborn and have become trapped in their homes.
