'Sons of Anarchy' Spinoff News, Update: Creator Kurt Sutter Clarifies Off-Shoot Show A "Contemporary Piece" Not A Prequel

After so many months of teases and hints, it has been confirmed in a report from Entertainment Weekly last month that the "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter "is now in the preliminary stages" of developing an offshoot series of the Charlie Hunnam-starred show.

Details about the project are scarce, however, it was divulged by the publication that the story will focus on the Mayans, most specifically, the Oakland-based Hispanic MC gang which the SAMCRO members often have a run-in with.

This left fans to believe that the upcoming FX programming will serve as a prequel to the original series. But the latest reports, this time from ComicBookResources.com, cited the words of Sutter who said that the drama won't be a prequel to SOA, although, he still wanted to do one.

Nonetheless, the new SOA universe-based series will be "a contemporary story" telling about the exploits of the aforementioned Motorcycle Club.

"It's the same [biker] subculture, but it'd be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand," Sutter said (via CBR). "I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told.

This premise further suggests that it could bring back some of the familiar characters seen in the first FX show. In fact, Sutter added that there could be "some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed."

"We're figuring out what that would look like and I'm in the process of meeting with writers and narrowing it down," Sutter added (via CBR).

The scribe, who also run the "Sons of Anarchy," further revealed his intention to "initiate a script for the pilot" when his new show, "The Bastard Executioner," goes off the air.

As for the yet-to-be-titled Mayan MC-centric TV project, Sutter will exec produce the show but hopes to find a showrunner to handle the show's daily management requirements.
