Sony Finally Going Bezel-less, Ditching OmniBalance for Good?
In an era of smartphones where less is more in terms of design, Sony has decided time and again to go against the current and carry on its classic approach with its offerings. But if the latest report is anything to go by, this is bound to change next year.
According to a new rumor, the Japanese company is getting ready to say goodbye to OmniBalance, the mobile design they have been using in the past five years. This setup involves chunky bezels that look outdated when put side by side the latest flagships by the competition.
This year, Sony stayed with the design for its flagships while manufacturers like Samsung, LG and Apple tried to one-up each other by shaving off as much bezels as they could in their respective flagships.
Some were turned off by the appearance of Sony's latest offering, the Xperia XZ Premium. Users who are looking for a smartphone that's stylish often look elsewhere despite its rich features and excellent camera.
However, it is looking like Sony is finally jumping the trend and will come out with bezel-less smartphones reportedly at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) next year.
A few months back, it was reported that Sony was going bezel-less and was planning to use the Japan Display LCD panel with 18:9 aspect ratio, which will make for a taller display.
Now, it is being said that the company will make use of a new bezel-free design called Mirai, which means "future" in Japanese. The smartphones that will be based on it will be "considered for release," which means that not every device unveiled there will be available for public consumption.
Either way, it seems that fans can expect some major changes from Sony next year. Not much is known about what the Mirai design actually has in store although Android Headlines points out that the need for name change suggests quite the departure.
