Sony Xperia J1 Compact Specs, Release Date: Metal Gear Solid-Inspired Sony Smartphone Hits Japan

Sony may not be releasing all of its smartphones globally, but that does not mean it has stopped in providing unique features and design cues to its devices.

Just yesterday, the company announced a special edition of its Sony Xperia J1 Compact.

According to a report by Phone Arena, the compact midranger will have a special tribute to upcoming game Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain by Hideo Kojima. The phone's design will have the logo of Outer Heaven, which is the base of the main villain of the Metal Gear Solid universe.

Based on the report, consumers who purchase this version of the Xperia J1 Compact would get an $8 voucher that they may use to purchase game-related products such as novels, comics, and others. Moreover, the actual device will offer several features like a custom ringtone, wallpaper, and OST tracks of the upcoming game.

Announced earlier this year, the Sony Xperia J1 Compact is considered a high-range midranger, due to its impressive specs. The Android-powered device boasts a 4.3-inch display with an HD (1280 x 720) resolution, 2GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, a quad-core CPU clocked at 2.2GHz, 16GB of built-in memory and a microSD card slot.

Other specs include Sony's well-known 20.7MP camera, a 2MP selfie shooter, a 2,300mAh battery, and Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

Unfortunately, the unique version of the device will only be available in Japan for 59,800 yen or about $480.

Since last year, Sony has been picking the smartphones that it would release for the international market, mainly because the company hasn't performed well, especially in emerging markets where dirt-cheap Android handsets are on the rise.

Still, Sony was able to deliver its high-end devices to most markets.
