How Will the Mid-Range Xperia X Stack Up Against the High-End Xperia XZ?
The Sony smartphone lineup is never short on having something to offer for everyone. Standing side by side with different price tags, different specifications, and catered to different markets, we take a closer look at the Sony Xperia X and the new Sony Xperia XZ.
Design, Display and Form Factor
The Xperia X was made available for purchase just last May, but Sony revealed another flagship at IFA just four months later. Both the Xperia X and XZ stays true to Sony's design language. The solid, rectangular form factor continues to encase both phones.

The Xperia XZ however gets an IP68 certification upgrade for water proofing and dust resistance. The corners are also a bit sharper than the Xperia X, as well as more rounded edges. Both phones also feature fingerprint readers.
Both smartphones feature a Full HD screen of 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution with IPS LCD technology. The with the main difference between the two is the screen size, with the Xperia X sporting a 5-inch display and the upgraded Xperia XZ with a 5.2-inch one.
Hardware and Performance
The Sony Xperia X is undoubtedly an upper mid-range phone, whereas the Sony Xperia XZ sits at the higher-end of the phone market spectrum. The Xperia X sports the relatively weaker Snapdragon 650 as opposed to the Snapdragon 820 inside the Xperia XZ.
The Xperia X does not fall short on actual performance though, as the Snapdragon 650 packs a hexa-core chipset clocked up to 1.8GHz with an Adreno 510 graphics processor. The Snapdragon 820, however, packs a quad-core processor with a processing power of up to 2.15GHz with an Adreno 530 GPU.
Both Xperia handsets come with two variants of internal storage, a 32GB and a 64GB option. Storage is expandable via microSD cards of up to 256GB. They also sport 3GB of RAM. This is surprising for the high-end Xperia XZ as it directly competes with other flagship smartphones sporting the standard 4GB of RAM or even higher.
Camera
The two Sony Xperia phones sport similar camera sensors. They pack Sony's very own 23-megapixel rear camera, with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection auto focus, and LED flash. The selfie snapper is a 13-megapixel sensor with a similar aperture. The Sony Xperia X can record videos of up to 1080p at 30fps. The higher-end Xperia XZ however can record videos up to 4K resolution with the same frame rates.
Battery
The mid-range Xperia X packs a 2620 mAh battery, while the Xperia XZ sports a slightly bigger 2900 mAh one. Both these battery packs currently sit at the lower average standard of modern smartphones, but should be able to power through a whole day with light or moderate usage.
Price and Availability
As mentioned above, the Xperia X has been available since May, with a $549.99 price tag. Availability of the Xperia XZ for the US market is set on October, with official pricing yet to be revealed. However, given its top-of-the-line specs, it will be seated around the $700 mark.
