Sony Xperia XZs Releases for $700

Sony aims for what it calls the "super mid-range" market with the new Xperia XZs, referring to the components and specs that place it just below the premium tier of phones. The Xperia XZs, however, will not come cheap as it goes on sale today, April 5. Unlocked units from retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy will cost $700, definitely a notch above what is commonly considered as the mid-range price range.

While the company has announced its premium line of phones at the Mobile World Congress earlier this year, the Xperia XZs was not counted among them. Instead, Sony has introduced the phone as a "super mid-range" device during its turn at the February MWC, as The Verge recounted. So, it might be a source of confusion for some when the Xperia XZs has been announced for sale earlier today, with a price tag of $700. What specs and features could this phone be packing to warrant such a price for a "mid-range" offering?

Android Central is of the opinion that for $700, a buyer could do much better than what the new Xperia XZs brings to the table. Looking at the specs, the phone looks very much like a refresh of the Xperia XZ, which has been released in September last year. Compared to the 3 GB random-access memory (RAM) of the previous XZ, the Xperia XZs is now equipped with 4 GB RAM. The internal storage has been doubled from that of its predecessor as well, bumping up the 32 GB capacity of the Xperia XZ to the 64 GB storage of the Xperia XZs.

Another thing that Sony invested in is the new 19 MP "Motion Eye" camera that is now included in the Xperia XZs. Supposedly, the new camera system is equipped with sensors that perform better in low light and is more responsive when it comes to autofocus.

Other than that, and the fact that the phone comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, there are not really a lot of features that justify its price tag of $700.
