Sony's 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' TV Series Picked Up by Turner Broadcasting
The hit animated film "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" is expected to come out with a TV series.
It was announced that the popular Sony Pictures Animation movie will be adapted into a TV series, which has now been picked up by Turner Broadcasting. The series is being produced and distributed by a Canadian network, DHX Media.
Vice president of acquisitions and co-productions of Turner Broadcasting Cecilia Persson expressed the benefit of having the series on their broadcast. She said, "As we continue to expand our programming lineup, we're on the lookout for great content that whole families can enjoy. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs offers exactly that and we're delighted to have acquired the series for Boomerang right across our international markets."
While the franchise will remain with Sony Pictures Animation, it will be the responsibilities of DHX Media to handle the distribution, licensing, and merchandising worldwide. With that, DHX Media revealed that it is working with Turner Broadcasting in putting the new series into family-oriented networks also in EMEA, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.
SVP Distribution Josh Scherba recently shared his excitement about the news as he said, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs has a huge global fan-base following the successful movie franchise and we are confident that the equally whacky and wonderful TV series will resonate with children and families globally."
Meanwhile, an executive producer from Sony pictures Animation also shared his sentiments about the upcoming TV series. Rick Mischel stated, "We're really excited to see the comedy and heart of Cloudy packed into a TV Series. This brand has fans worldwide, and now they get to go back and see all the adventures of Flint and Sam as teenagers."
The series was based on the comedic animated movies "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2." The films produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures were able to gain success worldwide, gaining a total of $510 million in theaters.
