'Spawn' Movie Reboot Update: Filming Set for February 2018; Todd McFarlane Promises a 'Dark and R-Rated' Film

The long-awaited "Spawn" movie reboot is finally coming together, with filming set to in February, director Todd McFarlane revealed at the New York Comic Con (NYCC).

As reported by Deadline, the preproduction for the project, which centers on the character that McFarlane himself created in the 1990s, is slated to kick off after Christmas.

The comic book legend said that the "Spawn" reboot will be "dark and R-rated," which he intends to achieve by using a realistic drama that centers on fear. In metaphorical terms, he explains:

It's going to be dark. I will have a shark in black water and if you're swimming he will come and you'll be gone and he will f—k you up.

Blumhouse has a first-look deal at Universal for the "Spawn" movie reboot. McFarlane believes that the latter could end up taking it. Either way, he aims to have full creative control with the production companies only there to handle the distribution and marketing.

We don't need your input, we don't need your cash, we don't need your creativity—and they don't like those deals. They always want the budget to go up because then they have to put money in it and then they own it.

This is also why the "Spawn" project has only $10 million budget, which McFarlane himself is providing. With the financial control, he gets the freedom to update fans via social media on the progress for the film, which he said studios hate.

Also, he will be able to make the movie — which is the first one he will direct — his own.

I didn't use to draw comic books and I drew comic books and I won awards. I don't know how to read music and I have a Grammy Award. I'm spending my own money so who cares if it doesn't work out. It's a $10 million budget movie, and (a studio) would just get a 22-year-old punk director. I just want to be the old punk directing it.

A release date for the "Spawn" movie reboot has not been set yet.
