'Spider-Man 3' Cast News: Andrew Garfield May Be Booted From Film, Alternate Storylines Revealed

According to the latest revelations from hacked emails at Sony Pictures, actor Andrew Garfield may be booted from the "Spider-Man" series as Sony might give up the franchise to Marvel Studios. It is believed that Marvel would start the series from scratch, which puts Garfield's role in jeopardy.

Hollywood Life reports that Marvel's reasoning for wanting total control is because they were not pleased with the "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise. The first film which was released in 2012 made $757.9 million worldwide, while the sequel, which was released last May, made $708.9 million.

Both figures are said to be below what the studio has expected. Marvel was also reportedly unhappy with Sony's plans for future "Spider-Man" related films, such as an Aunt May solo movie and a female "Spider-Man" movie.

The Daily Beast came across a detailed 8-page document outlining a plan to reboot the "Spider-Man" franchise. The email came from Studio 8 head Jeff Robinov and was sent to Sony co-chair Amy Pascal.

In his email, Robinov described a new vision for the future of the franchise.

"In the next Spider-Man movies, we can't go back to the origin story. Think of the 25 films in the James Bond franchise; just because a new creative team comes aboard, and breathes new life into a classic property, doesn't mean the origin story has to be retold," he wrote.

Robinov also discussed some potential plots for the film.

"I might suggest looking at what is widely thought to be the most beloved Spider-Man storyline of all time— Kraven's Last Hunt," he said.

In the storyline, which appeared in several "Spider-Man" comic books, Kraven the Hunter tracks down Spider-Man, shoots him repeatedly, then buries him. Kraven dons the Spider-Man costume himself and starts attacking criminals.

Another angle which Robinov said that he wanted to explore is tackling the web slinger as an adult.

"Spidey hasn't remained a teenager over the 52 years he's been around," wrote Robinov. "He's moved in with his girlfriend, gotten married, and in some storylines, even became a science teacher at a high school."

"Spiderman 3" is slated for release in 2018.
