'Spider-Man' Plot and Casting Rumors: No Title Star Yet, Drew Goddard to Direct
Sony and Marvel's reboot of the "Spider-Man" film franchise has not yet found its title star. It however has a confirmed director on board, in the of person Drew Goddard. Goddard will also write for the film.
Goddard, according to a report in Tech Times, is considered a "fan favorite" and is known for his work in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Alias," "Lost," and recently, Netflix's "Daredevil."
As far as the movie's lead star is concerned, without any official announcement from Sony Pictures, only casting rumors have been circulating online so far. According to a report in Screen Rant, among those included in the rumor mills are Dylan O'Brien and Ansel Elgort. O'Brien has however debunked the rumor saying that he has not been approached by Sony. He is known for his work in the MTV Series "Teen Wolf." Elgort on the other hand, who plays Caleb Prior in the "Divergent" movies, was said to be "fairly neutral" about the idea.
It was earlier rumored that Sony was looking for a young actor to play Peter Parker, and this was later on confirmed by Kevin Feige when he has that the new Spider-Man movie will have a high school Peter Parker.
According to a report in The Wrap, Sony has narrowed down its choice to a shortlist of five young actors and will supposedly make test offers to the contenders within the next few weeks. The shortlist includes Nat Wolff of "The Fault in our Stars," Asa Butterfield of "Ender's Game," Tom Holland of "In the Heart of the Sea," Timothee Chalamet of "Interstellar" and Liam James of "The Killing."
The movie's plot details is also being kept under wraps, but recent rumors point to a possible journey of the webcrawler to Savage Land. The report in Tech Times cites a comic book store owner as the source of information that some noteworthy folks at Sony have been shopping around at his story recently, buying up Spider-Man comics and graphic novels. The source noted that most of the materials bought by these folks from Sony were on Spider-Man's adventures to the Savage Land.
In the comic books, this land is a prehistoric land in Antartica, with dinosaurs and a Tarzan-like guardian named Ka-Zar. The report speculates that this "story arc" is possibly being considered for the upcoming reboot.
