SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 2 Release Date, Spoilers: Premiere Delayed to 2015, Includes Live Action Footage
It has been a long wait for a sequel to the "SpongeBob Squarepants" movie, which premiered in 2004. Though the sequel, "SpongeBob Squarepants: Sponge Out of Water" has finished filming on November 2013, the release date has been pushed back from 2014 to 2015.
Originally scheduled for a 2014 release, Paramount announced that the film is now set to be released on Feb. 6, 2015. The film will also include live action footage, the same as its predecessor.
The movie's plot focuses on Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas), a pirate who is looking for the final page to a book that makes any evil plan of his to come true. The missing part of the book happens to be the secret recipe for the Krabby Patty, which is jealously guarded by Mr. Krabs. The pirate steals it, so SpongeBob and his friends Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton go on a mission above the surface of the sea to retrieve the recipe and save the city.
Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Mr. Lawrence and Carolyn Lawrence are back to reprise their roles. Aside from Banderas — who will be appearing in the live action sequences — the film will also feature Guns N' Roses lead guitarist Slash.
USA Today had an exclusive interview with Kenny (who voices SpongeBob) and director Paul Tibbitt at the Comic-Con San Diego last July.
"It's a bold new world where no Sponge has gone before. I'm still getting used to it," Kenny spoke of the different world the of the characters. "You've seen someone in a certain way for so long … it's just really different."
"It's not like SpongeBob has gone through any personality rewiring, there's no reboot. Daniel Craig will not be voicing him, it's just a very different likeness," said Kenny, alluding to the live action footage wherein SpongeBob and company appear in 2D.
Tibbitt also shared his take on the story.
"They all come to shore in our world. And they transform themselves into an Avengers-type team to do battle … I don't know if these guys could take on Thor and The Hulk, but they might give them a run for their money," he said.
