The St Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals will face off again on Wednesday in a vital match up, which could determine which team makes it through to the National League Championship Series. The series is all tied at 1-1 after the opening two encounters, although many pundits are now saying the Nationals have the advantage by being all square coming into Game 3. The Nationals will not be turning to young pitching star Stephen Strasburg as general manager Mike Rizzo previously stated in September that he would opt to shut him down for the remainder of the season.
That means Edwin Jackson will be coming onto the mound for today's game, having had a very ordinary season.
Meanwhile Chris Carpenter, although spending most of 2012 on the disabled list, is known as a postseason star, and in his six postseason starts last season he went 4-0 with 3.25 ERA.
The game is also significant as this will be the first time Nationals Park will host a playoff game.
