'Star Trek 3' Release Date 2016: New Director and New Writers Jumping Aboard
The third title in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise still has no confirmed release date yet but it is currently slated for a 2016 release.
It is still unclear if the production crew has already started filming yet but it is likely they will be in 2015. Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura in the film, is currently busy preparing for shooting the Avatar sequel, so it is quite possible that filming the third "Star Trek" title will happen in 2015.
Unlike the first two titles in the franchise, J.J. Abrams won't be directing the third title as he is currently busy putting "Star Wars: Episode VII" together for a December 2015 deadline. It is still unconfirmed as to who will be directing the third title but it will likely to be Joe Cornish, who directed Attack the Block and Adventures of Tintin both in 2011.

The writers for the upcoming Star Trek film are also experiencing a change. Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci wrote the screenplay for the first two films but only Orci will be continuing to the third title. It may seem the writer's block will be experiencing a shortage of writers but Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne will be coming onboard as Orci's screenplay collaborators.
There are also speculations that the third title in the franchise will be making a return to the original series' roots. Orci explains in a podcast with Humans from Earth that the second title of the franchise ended with the crew finally heading out to deep space for an exploration mission.
"In 'Into Darkness' they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2008 Star Trek – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren't the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie," Orci says in the podcast.
