'Star Trek Beyond' News: New Details Revealed
New details of the upcoming "Star Trek Beyond" movie have been shared through an exclusive on-the-set video of the film, according to a report in SlashFilm. The film is the third film in the "Star Trek" franchise, which has been rebooted.
The video came courtesy of Entertainment Tonight and includes a visit to the set of the Enterprise and quick interviews with some of the cast members. According to the report, the video provided additional details about the ship and new weapons. It also revealed a new addition to the characters in the film.
First off, the video confirms the storyline of the upcoming film which is set during a mission that has been going on for the past two years. The crew is already feeling homesick and the ship is not in tip-top shape anymore, after two years in space.
According to an interview with one of the stars, John Cho who plays Hikaru Sulu, his character is especially homesick because he left a daughter back home. He also hinted that his daughter will play a special role in the film's story, something which he said he was told to keep mum about.
Other revelations about the ship's new weapons came courtesy of one of the lead actors, Chris Pine. He mentioned that "bigger phasers" were on board the Enterprise. In terms of the crew and the ship's look, another actor, Karl Urban, mentioned that these were "more retro."
This year is the 50th anniversary of the "Star Trek" franchise, with the TV series that started it all in 1966, so it is important for Paramount Pictures to make "Star Trek Beyond" good enough for it to be a worthy tribute to the show's creator, Gene Roddenberry.
The film bows in theaters on July 22, 2016. It stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Idris Elba, Simon Pegg (who also co-wrote the script), Karl Urban, John Cho and Zachary Quinto.
