'Star Trek: Discovery': Jason Isaacs Nabs Lead Role
Jason Isaacs is the latest addition to the growing roster of actors to be featured in the upcoming CBS All Access series "Star Trek: Discovery."
According to Deadline, Isaacs will play the role of Captain Lorca, the skipper of the Starship Discovery. He will portray the male lead role alongside actress Sonequa Martin-Green, who has been chosen as a lieutenant commander. Other big names in the list include James Frain, who will play Spock's father Sarek; Michelle Yeoh, who will play the captain of the Starship Shenzhou; and Anthony Rapp, who will play the role of a space fungus expert.
For the Starfleet officers, several names have been chosen to play important roles. Terry Serpico is Admiral Anderson, a high-ranking official, while Sam Vartholomeos is Ensign Connor, a junior officer. Maulik Pancholy will portray Dr. Nambue, the chief medical officer of the Starship Shenzhou.
"Star Trek: Discovery" is said to debuting late summer or early fall. It has been delayed several times, reportedly due to post-production and casting problems. Bryan Fuller also made headlines when he decided to step down as showrunner.
CBS previously announced that the series would air in January. Instead of the expected series debut, the network chose to air "The Good Wife" spinoff, "The Good Fight," on its streaming service.
In a recent event, Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS Corp., expressed his confidence that the show would do well.
"There are millions and millions of Trekkies out there. We know for a fact that the other versions of 'Star Trek' — there were seven other series, some of them were great and some of them were terrible — they all did really well on Netflix. That gave us great confidence that this was the right choice to put the full court press on 'All Access,'" said the CBS chief, according to Variety.
"Star Trek: Discovery" is expected to air late summer or early fall on CBS All Access.
