'Star Trek: Discovery': Rainn Wilson to Portray Original Character; Sonequa Martin-Green's Character Revealed
New cast announcements for "Star Trek: Discovery" were revealed recently, including Sonequa Martin-Green's character details and a "The Office" alum joining the roster.
According to Variety, Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute on all nine seasons of "The Office," has been tapped to play the role of Harry Mudd in the upcoming CBS All Access series. CBS has yet to reveal how many episodes Wilson will be appearing in, and the extent of his role is unknown at this point in time.
For those who are unaware, Harry Mudd is an original "Star Trek" character who is described to be a "charismatic interstellar con man." A role originated by Roger C. Carmel, Mudd and the Enterprise's crew members met multiple times in the original series.
In other cast news, Martin-Green's character has finally been announced. Her casting was revealed not too long ago, but details about who she would be playing were kept tightly under wraps, presumably because of her involvement on AMC's "The Walking Dead."
Fans of "The Walking Dead" know by now that Martin-Green's character in the series, Sasha, was killed off in the recent season 7 finale. A lot of people suspected that her character would die soon because of the actress' casting on "Star Trek: Discovery."
Martin-Green will play the lead role of First Officer Michael Burnham on the Starship Discovery, formerly known as the Enterprise. Her captain, Capt. Lorca, will be played by Jason Isaac. Her character was previously thought to be named Rainsford, but CBS has officially clarified this.
Joining them on the USS Discovery are Anthony Rapp's science officer Stamets, Doug Jones' science officer Saru and James Frain's Vulcan astrophysicist Sarek. Frain's character also happens to be Spock's father.
Other cast members include Michelle Yeoh, Shazad Latif, Chris Obi, Mary Chieffo, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy and Sam Vartholomeos.
"Star Trek: Discovery" will premiere in the late summer or early fall.
