'Star Trek: Discovery' Rumors: CBS Reveals Production Is Underway
After facing numerous roadblocks, "Star Trek: Discovery" has finally begun production. This much was revealed when CBS released a special video confirming the commencement.
"Star Trek: Discovery," the prequel series that is set to air on CBS All Access, the network's streaming platform, hit a few obstacles on the way to production. Its original showrunner, Bryan Fuller, previously stepped down from his post due to other work commitments. CBS also pushed back the show's release date - not once, but twice.
However, it looks like things are picking up for the series as production is already underway. The video released by the network also provides a look into a few key details of the show, particularly some of the uniforms that will be donned by cast members and the show's namesake, the USS Discovery.
The uniforms, according to Inverse, are very important when it comes to tying the show up with other "Star Trek" works. The publication notes the similarities and differences among generations of "Star Trek" uniforms, including the ones seen in the more recent films. Based on the timeline, Inverse posits that "Discovery" could be set in 2255, given that the series is set a decade before the original.
A slew of cast members have already been confirmed for parts in the upcoming show. Most recently, James Frain had signed on to play Spock's father, Sarek. Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones join Frain as Starfleet crew members. Yeoh will play Georgiou, the Starfleet Captain of Starship Shenzhou. Jones will play Lt. Saru, while Rapp will portray Lt. Stamets, a gay character.
Shazad Latif, Chris Obi, and Mary Chieffo have all been tapped to play new Klingon characters. Latif will play commanding officer Kol, while Obi will play Kol's mentor, T'Kuvma. FInally, Chieffo will play L'Rell a battle deck commander. Klingon uniforms can also be notably seen in the production video released by CBS.
Finally, Sonequa Martin-Green from "The Walking Dead" will play the lead role as lieutenant commander of the USS Discovery.
CBS has yet to announce a premiere date for "Star Trek: Discovery."
