'Star Trek: Discovery' Renewed or Canceled? Season 2 Won't Likely Air Until 2019
Will "Star Trek: Discovery" get another season on CBS All Access? The renewal might likely happen given that the show helped increase subscribers on the streaming platform but it might not begin its run until 2019.
CBS All Access experienced a deluge in subscriptions following the debut of "Star Trek: Discovery" last Sunday, Sept. 24. Viewers were able to sample the streaming service for a free seven-day trial and many opted to stick with it since the platform exclusively distributes "Star Trek: Discovery" episodes in the U.S.
The move also enabled CBS All Access to also receive an increase in its revenue stream for its mobile app. The company stated in a report that the numbers are expected to elevate in due time.
It showed full confidence in the strength of the series to draw viewers, hence a renewal is likely. There are no exact numbers to the platform's subscriber base but the company confirmed a 200 percent increase since "Star Trek: Discovery" became part of its program lineup.
CBS All Access, however, has not officially green-lighted "Star Trek: Discovery" for season 2 despite the latest developments. But showrunner Alex Kurtzman discussed planning the next season with The Hollywood Reporter.
"If we get a second season, I'd like us to agree on a number in advance so we can make sure we are planning accordingly," Kurtzman said in an interview. "We want to take the right amount of time and don't want to rush," he added, saying a 2019 run would be most ideal for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 2.
"Star Trek: Discovery" received a 15-episode order for the debut season but not all of these will air this year. The second half will run on the streaming platform in January 2018 and the cast has yet to finish filming the finale. Kurtzman and those working behind the scenes have also not yet finished post-production work on episode 5, which airs in two weeks.
"That gives you a sense of how long it takes between shooting and post," Kurtzman said in further explaining the kind of work that's poured in for the show. "If people see and love the show, ultimately, they probably won't remember the delays."
"Star Trek: Discovery" airs Sundays 9:00 p.m. EST on CBS All Access. Netflix airs the new episodes on the following night for viewers outside of U.S. and Canada.
