'Star Trek Discovery': Sonequa Martin-Green's Character Name Changed, Launches Fans Into Speculating

The name of the character that Sonequa Martin-Green will play in "Star Trek: Discovery" has been revealed, but it prompted more questions than clarifications.

CBS has announced that "The Walking Dead" star will lead the "Star Trek: Discovery" cast in the role of First Officer Michael Burnham.

Since Michael is generally considered a male name, many fans are asking why Martin-Green's character goes by this name. Some say that it may have become a more gender-neutral name in the future.

One Reddit user was quick to point out that Michael is not an exclusive male name and has been used as a girl's name, but only rarely. Notable female personalities going by the name are Michael Learned and Michael Michele.

It is also to be noted that Martin-Green was first announced to play Lieutenant Commander Rainsford in "Star Trek: Discovery." That is both a change in the name and the rank.

It will be interesting to see what the character will be like and if there is an explanation behind the name. For now, fans will have to wait for CBS to provide more details about the role.

Although she remains tight-lipped about her character, Martin-Green, fresh from her five-season stint as Sasha in "The Walking Dead," treated fans with morsels of details about "Star Trek: Discovery" in an interview with TVLine.

She said that this new series will offer "a different take" from the ones that fans were used to seeing in the "Star Trek" canon.

"It's going to be bigger, rawer and grittier ... and the story's going to build on itself. It's going to be a tremendous journey," Martin-Green teased.

"Since Star Trek has always been through the eyes of the captain, to be coming from [his second-in-command's] mindset is going to be refreshing and challenging in ways that are very thrilling," she went on to say.

"Star Trek: Discovery" will premiere on CBS later this year.
