'Star Wars Battlefront' Free Play Update: Sony unlocks PS Plus multiplayer games for PS4 owners

Sony has offered all PlayStation 4 owners a chance to check out Electronic Arts' "Star Wars Battlefront" and other online multiplayer games through its online subscription gaming service PlayStation Plus at the weekend.

"We're bringing back free online multiplayer to all PS4 owners starting this Friday, courtesy of PlayStation Plus," said SCE America's Andy Lum in a blog post. "What better way to check out the recently released free DLC Star Wars Battlefront Battle of Jakku before the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The weekend free play started on Friday, Dec. 11 at 12:01 a.m Pacific, and ended on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific.

In addition to "Star Wars Battlefront," PS4 players could also try out "Madden NFL 16," "Call of Duty: Black Ops," "NBA 2K16," "Destiny: The Taken King," and "Grand Theft Auto Online." These PS Plus online multiplayer games are also teased in a promotional image (image) for the upcoming free play.

To get access to the games, PS4 owners needed to log in to their PlayStation Network account. From there, they could launch "Star Wars Battlefront" or any other multiplayer game available on the PS Plus. PS4 players could access these games without any membership commitment within the stated period.

Normally, these multiplayer games are exclusive to PS Plus subscribers who pay a monthly subscription of $9.99, quarterly or three-month subscription of $17.99, or yearly or 12-month subscription of $49.99. For those interested in getting a membership, the PS Plus also offers a 14-day trial for new members.

Other benefits for subscribing to PS Plus include access to online game-save storage of up to 3 GB and discounts on classic and new titles for up to 75 percent. In addition, PS Plus members also receive free games each month. For December, "Gauntlet: Slayer Edition," "King's Quest - Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember," "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon," "Freedom Wars," "Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken," and "SSX" are free for members to download.
