'Star Wars: Episode 9' Release Date, Latest News: New Premiere Schedule Set for Dec. 20, 2019

"Star Wars: Episode 9" looks to be back on track, with a new director at the helm. The delay did cost the production of the new film some time, though, with the next "Star Wars" movie's release date moved to Dec. 20, 2019.

The production team of "Star Wars: Episode 9" has figured out their new release date, and it will be on Dec. 20, 2019, as they officially announced through social media on Sep. 13. "Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019," they said in a Twitter post this morning, right after announcing the new writer-director.

J.J. Abrams will be back on the director's seat, this time to head the final chapter of the latest "Star Wars" trilogy. This decision puts Abrams in charge of both the opening and closing chapters of this era's trilogy, with Rian Johnson's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" in between.

"Star Wars: Episode IX" was previously set to launch on May 29, 2019. The new date postpones this by about seven months, according to Collider. This schedule also puts the new "Star Wars" movie right in the middle of the holiday season, and pits it against a few other releases in that time.

The movie will be released in theaters just a bit after Patty Jenkins' "Wonder Woman 2," which will show on Dec. 13, 2019. Also expected to adjust to avoid the box-office behemoth is the live action "Aladdin" feature, which has now moved to May 29, 2019. Universal's "Wicked" musical and "Masters of the Universe" are also slated for Dec. 18, 2019, and both of them are expected to reconsider their schedules as well.

Abrams will take the director's seat after the departure of Colin Trevorrow. The latter left the project allegedly due to a conflict with Lucasfilm. Chris Terrio will also be co-writing the last part of this "Star Wars" trilogy, as well, according to IGN.
