'Star Wars Rebels' Executive Producer Talks About Season 2 Finale And What's In Store For Season 3

A few days ago, fans of the American CGI-animated series "Star Wars Rebels" said goodbye to the series' second season, when the season finale aired last March 30. With the show set to return for a third season, the season finale also left some questions unanswered. The show's executive producer David Filoni, in an interview with io9, answered some of these questions as well as shared some tidbits about the upcoming season.

One of them is about a major character, Ahsoka Tano, who also used to have Darth Vader (a.k.a. Anakin Skywalker) as a master. Their showdown is one of finale's major scenes but according to the io9 report, her fate after the duel was not as clear as fans would have wanted. Given this, when Filoni was asked about what really happened to her, he would not reveal anything. All he said was he had already thought of "certain specifics around the future of that character, where she is, what's happening, if she dies how would she survive if she did?" He however qualified that these are questions that he would not be looking into "anytime soon."

The lead character, the young Ezra Bridger, was seen in the latter part of season 2 as dealing with the temptations of turning to the Dark Side. Later on in the finale, he is shown opening a Sith Holocron and confronting a pair of ominous, red eyes. Fans also discover that it is Darth Maul who trying to lure him to the Dark Side. Filoni confirmed that both Ezra and his master, Kanan, suffered immense blows in their encounter with Darth Maul.

Darth Maul is definitely back and according to Filoni, the villain will be "the foil on the Darker side of the Force for our heroes in the next season." He added, "You will see more of Maul, which I think is a great thing for the show."

With Darth Maul becoming Season 3's big bad, it also means that the Inquisitors will no longer be making trouble for the rebels – not as much anyway, according to Filoni. There is a new Inquisitor introduced in the finale who is said to be a Terellian Jango Jumper. Filoni added that since the show would like to move closer to the "A New Hope" timeline where Inquisitors no longer existed, the next season will feature less of these villains.

Season 3 of the animated series is slated to start sometime within 2016.
