'Star Wars: Rebels' Latest News: Duel Between Obi-Wan, Darth Maul Teased in Season 3
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul are set to face off in one of the forthcoming episodes of the 3D CGI animated series "Star Wars Rebels."
With only five episodes remaining before its third season ends, "Star Wars" fans will finally get to witness the highly anticipated rematch of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul in the 20th episode of the season titled "Twin Suns."
The official episode description of "Twin Suns" reads: "Reacting to a vision of Maul, Ezra defies Hera and Kanan to travel to a remote planet in hopes of stopping the former Sith lord from carrying out his plans."
The rematch between the two powerful warriors is considered to be one for the ages given the dark history shared by Maul and Obi-Wan. Maul has directly killed two of the most important people in Obi-Wan's life: his Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn and Mandalorian leader Satine Kryze, the love of his life.
The former apprentice of Darth Sidious bears a deep grudge of his own, since Obi-Wan was the one who defeated him and cut him in half. The drastic change in his life brought about by his defeat and injury drove him crazy for several years, and he lived on purely rage and hate.
A short teaser for the upcoming episode was reportedly released, and Comicbook.com has shared some screenshots and a GIF of Obi-Wan and Maul's much-anticipated reunion.
As can be seen in the GIF, the much-aged Obi-Wan stands with his familiar fighting stance, firmly wielding his blue light saber. Meanwhile, Maul displays a flashier combat stance with his iconic double-bladed red lightsaber.
Although the matchup between Obi-Wan and Maul is an event many "Star Wars" fans have been clamoring for since "The Clone Wars" and "The Phantom Menace," executive producer Dave Filoni has clarified that "Star Wars Rebels" is still focused on Ezra' story.
"You do tread carefully because you can't do it just because you're trying to add something [to the guest star's past]," Filoni told Comicbook.com. "It has to be valuable to Ezra. This experience, whatever it is, whatever form it takes, has to be valuable to the characters that are the center of Star Wars Rebels," he added.
"Star Wars Rebels" airs Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. ET on Disney XD.
