'Star Wars: Rogue One' News: Initial Plot Details and Release Date Revealed

Star Wars fans heard some exciting news about the upcoming spinoff films being developed towards the end of this past weekend's Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California. During a panel discussion, fans were treated to some details about one particular spinoff film, "Star Wars: Rogue One."

According to a report on BGR, the panel, composed of the film's director Gareth Richards and other Lucasfilm executives, shared some interesting details about the movie's plot. Richards shared that it "will revolve around a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy."

It will be set between the events of "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" and "Episode IV: A New Hope." Interestingly enough, it will feature characters who do not have magical powers like the Jedi, according to Richards. The film will also have a darker tone compared to the other films in the franchise.

Richards said that the film "aims for more realism than previous Star Wars films," given that the characters are carrying on the resistance without any special powers. He added that some of the film's crew members have had experience working on war movies such as "Saving Private Ryan," "Black Hawk Down," and "Zero Dark Thirty."

The only confirmed casting so far is that of Felicity Jones, who will play a Rebel soldier. "Prometheus" creature team director Neil Scanlan will also head the creature team in the new movie. Neil Lamont and Doug Chiang will be the production designers. "Zero Dark Thirty's" cinematographer, Greig Fraser will work on the film as well.

Film production will be done in the U.K. and other locations around the world.

The film will be released in theaters on Dec. 16, 2016. It will also be the first film that is part of what is now called "Star Wars Anthology" films.
