'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Flashback Scene: Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi Featured In a Scene, According To JJ Abrams
JJ Abrams, director of the recently released movie "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," revealed a little secret during an interview. That secret has something to do with Daisy Ridley's character, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and a flashback scene.
For those who haven't watched the film yet, the following paragraphs may contain spoilers. But for those who want to find out what the "Star Wars" director has revealed, read on.
In the movie, there is a flashback sequence that gives hints at the origin of Rey (Ridley). This flashback scene happened at the basement of Maz Kanata's castle. Here, Rey finds Luke Skywalker's lightsaber, which has long been lost. As she touches the weapon, Rey has a vision involving a mourning Luke, R2-D2, Kylo Ren, and of herself as a young girl. In that vision, one can hear Obi-Wan Kenobi say "Rey … these are your first steps."
Those words were voiced over by none other than Ewan McGregor, who played the role of a young Obi-Wan in "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace."
"We asked Ewan McGregor to come in and do the line," Abrams told Entertainment Weekly. "And he was awesome and we were very grateful. He was incredibly sweet and handsome, and all that stuff. Then he rode off on his motorcycle. Literally the coolest voice over actor ever."
Abrams revealed further that McGregor did not utter "Rey." That part was spoken by the late Alec Guinness. Producer Bryan Burk edited the dream sequence and put in that part from Guinness. Burk spliced in a previously recorded dialogue of the late actor where he was actually saying "Afraid."
"They cut it, and you hear the performance — he's saying it the way I would have begged Alec Guinness to have said it. It is so crazy perfect," Abrams says. "So when you hear Obi-Wan talk to Rey it is both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor doing the voice."
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was released on Friday, Dec. 18. The film is still currently showing in theaters in the United States.
