'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' News, Release Date: New Details on Praetorian Guards Revealed at NYCC

It won't be long before "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" finally hits theaters, and bits of details about the movie are already coming to light. Earlier this week, new details about Supreme Leader Snoke's Praetorian guards were revealed at the New York Comic-Con (NYCC) 2017 through the "Star Wars: The Last Jedi's" booth.

If there is one thing about Snoke that fans of the "Star Wars" franchise have not yet learned much about, that would be his imposing guards. Interestingly, the promotional materials for the upcoming movie heavily feature these guards, with one poster showing them clad in their red armor and robes and carrying their weapons. The Praetorians derived their collective name from the guards of ancient Roman emperors.

At this week's NYCC, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi's" booth replicated a Starkiller Base control room and was generous enough to drop never-before-known details about Snoke's eight personal guards. These details include the Praetorians having "electro-plasma energy filament running along their blade's edge," as well as being capable of adjusting their fighting style in the middle of a combat by spewing out the two ends of their weapons and turning them into dagger-like single blades. The booth also revealed that because of their unique capabilities, Snoke's guards can be "fearsomely unpredictable" in their battles.

Fans have yet to know what the role of the Praetorians will be in the upcoming film, but based on their descriptions, they are expected to be among the greatest soldiers in the "Star Wars" trilogy. Also, unlike the Stormtroopers who have been known for their tendency to become clumsy in battles, the introduction of Snoke's guards promises a drastic shift in pace for the franchise, as it features real baddies who are capable of potentially destabilizing the resistance.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" hits theaters on Dec. 15.
