Steenburgen on 'Orange is the New Black': Veteran Actress' Role Kept Secret

Mary Steenburgen will join the cast of "Orange is the New Black" for season three, exciting fans and leading them to wonder who else may be coming onboard. The popular Netflix series has just released season two and has fans eagerly awaiting its return sometime next year.

"Very excited to go to my first wardrobe fitting of OITNB! Will I be in orange or black?" Steenburgen tweeted on June 12.

Production is already underway for the hit series featuring Taylor Schilling. Laura Prepon announced last week that she would be returning for the third season and appear in every episode, making fans quite happy. The show has a very loyal following that is seemingly growing with each season. Prepon had a scheduling conflict and was not able to be a part of season two but assured fans she would be back.

No details have been released yet on Steenburgen's character, as producers still want to have some secrets for the upcoming season. However, the veteran actress will surely fit in well with the cast and be able to adapt to her new surroundings, whether they be behind or outside of the bars.

Season two, which was released on June 6, featured Lori Petty as a guest star and a special episode directed by Jodie Foster. Lorraine Toussaint also joined the cast this season as a regular member, adding a new dimension to the series.

"Orange is the New Black" is based on the book of the same name, written by Piper Kerman. It has been praised for featuring so many powerful female actresses as well as a female creator and director in Jenji Cohen.

"I honestly don't think there is another show on television right now which has as many strong, independent female characters," Prepon said on the "Today" show. "Netflix is awesome because we totally push the envelope. Jenji Cohen – nothing is taboo for her – we go there – and our viewers are smart."
