Stephen King Explains Why 'The Dark Tower' Was a Failure
After experiencing some snags in its production, "The Dark Tower" finally hit theaters last July. Unfortunately, the years spent in planning and developing the movie did not quite pay off, as the first adaptation of Stephen King's epic did not do so well in cinemas. Recently, the renowned novelist explained why the movie did not work.
Before it opened in theaters, some thought that "The Dark Tower" would do well at the global box office, not just because it was based on a novel by King but also due to the involvement of such big names in the filmmaking industry like Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. However, all the efforts put into the project were ultimately met with unfavorable reviews from critics and moviegoers and generated a rather unsatisfactory box office performance.
In a recent interview, King said that the major obstacle in doing "The Dark Tower's" film adaptation was the fact that the original epic was very long.
"The other part of it was the decision to do a PG-13 feature adaptation of books that are extremely violent and deal with violent behavior in a fairly graphic way. That was something that had to be overcome, although I've gotta say, I thought [screenwriter] Akiva Goldsman did a terrific job in taking a central part of the book and turning it into what I thought was a pretty good movie," he said in an interview with Vulture.
King also revealed that a "The Dark Tower" TV series was currently in the works, although he was not certain what would happen with that. According to him, the upcoming TV series adaptation will be a total reboot so fans will have to see it. The novelist also pointed out that the PG-13 rating given to the film kept "The Dark Tower" from dealing with the really violent content of the original book and prevented the movie from moving forward.
"The Dark Tower" was directed by Nikolaj Arcel and starred Elba, McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Abbey Lee, Katheryn Winnick, Fran Kranz and more.
