'Strafe' Release Date, News: First-Person Game Gives Player One Life Only
Most first-person titles allow players to traverse through vast levels that can be mastered when played repeatedly, and if the character dies he just returns to his last save. One game aims to be different, posing a unique yet familiar experience while paying homage to the classic '90s, and that is Pixel Titans' "Strafe."
On a PlayStation blog post, Director Thom Glunt jokes that the game is pushing the boundaries of computer-generated photorealism, because in actuality it is rendered in pixelated design, much like "Minecraft." However, what it lacks in the popular realistic graphics is easily overshadowed by the interesting concept of gameplay.
"You play as a Scrapper on an impossibly dangerous mission at the edge of the galaxy," Glunt explains. "You only have one life to navigate all the nightmarish terrains of 'Strafe.' When you die, nothing will ever be the same again," he continued.
This means that a single life corresponds to a single map, while dying would mean a completely new experience with uncharted levels, making it truly a challenge and poses extreme replay value. There will be no walkthroughs, and everything will be up to the player to decide, which creates a certain adrenaline rush.
Aside from the "one-life-only" principle, the classic vibe it gives off is bold yet could pay off really well, as it makes the game a blast from the past. The official website has the tagline "Bleeding Edge Graphics and Gameplay 1996" coupled with old-school webpage interface, further immersing players into feeling that it is an old game brought to the present.
The game is funded through Kickstarter, and has received sufficient support from backers. With a goal of $185,096, it has amassed a total of $207,847, and so it will only be a matter of time until the game comes.
"Strafe" arrives on PC and PlayStation 4 (PS4) on May 9, 2017.
