Stranger Picks Up Family's $211 Bill at Wal-Mart
A stranger picked up a family's $211 at Wal-Mart in a random act of kindness at Christmas. Ruby Modlin and her family were the recipients of a Christmas gift that could not have come at a better time.
"I kept noticing this man, and I'd smile at him," Modlin told KCCI News. She was doing her routine Christmas shopping, picking up last minute items needed to prepare a meal and holiday cookies at an Iowa Wal-Mart when she noticed the stranger. He followed her throughout the store but never spoke to her until they got to the checkout lane.
As Modlin's husband went to pay, the man stepped in front and pulled out his own credit card.
"I said, 'What?' He said, 'I'm paying for this.' I said, 'No, you're not.' He said, 'Yes, I am,'" Modlin recounted. The stranger finally convinced her to let him pay and handed her the receipt, which totaled $211 and wished her a "Merry Christmas."
"He said, 'That's my daughter and wife over there. We just wanted to come out and do something nice for somebody, and we picked you guys,'" Modlin explained. The man also told her that he and his family had decided to perform a random act of kindness for one family and had come to Wal-Mart in search of that family.
The kindness could not have come at a better time for the Modlin family. For the last six months, Ruby has been battling a liver condition and will soon need to undergo a liver transplant. Times have been hard for the family, but this one act of kindness really touched her.
"I just want to thank them," she said. "I don't know who they are, but I hope they see this. And from my husband, and granddaughter and me, we just want to thank them."
"They're just sent from heaven," added Ruby's husband Ray. "There's no amount of words that can thank people like that," he told KCCI.
