Students Strip Searched After Cellphone Goes Missing During Exams
Students in Quebec were allegedly strip-searched after a cellphone went missing while the students were taking a test. The school board is now investigating what happened in the classroom and whether the teacher will face disciplinary action.
"They put us in a small room," one teenage student told QMI Agency. "They said 'take off your bra, then raise your arms.' They even tapped us on the back."
Students at the Cap-Jeunesse High School were initially told to place their cellphones on their teacher's desk in order to prevent cheating during their final exams. One phone apparently went missing, and the teacher then ordered the strip search.
"It was a disproportionate action under the circumstances," school board spokeswoman Nadyne Brochu told QMI. "These are not measures that are recommended by either the school or the school board. In the heat of the action, the decision seemed the best."
The principal of the school was not informed of the teacher's decision, but the school board said that parents were immediately notified. Students will have a chance to re-take the exam, and the school board is conducting "an administrative investigation."
The teacher's decision has been called outrageous and strongly criticized. Many wonder if the strip-search was even legal and if the teacher should face legal charges.
"ONE student MIGHT have been trying to cheat, and you strip search 28 minors because of it. The teachers should LOSE their jobs and have criminal charges brought against them. They don't have the legal right to strip search anyone. This school board spokesperson should lose her job too for being an idiot," noted Sun News reader Murray B. Wheeler.
"They obeyed, didn't they? That right there should speak volumes. Why are we so afraid of getting in trouble for going against authority, even when the authority is clearly in the wrong?" asked Brad Parker.
