Super Fight Preview: Miguel Cotto vs Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez
The old Mexico-Puerto Rico boxing rivalry will again be showcased with two of each nation's most popular fighters finally stepping up to fight.
Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez are two fighters who carry the pride of their respective nation's rich boxing traditions, and there's no better treat for fans of both boxers than seeing them fight each other on Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Mexico's Alvarez and Puerto Rico's Alvarez are the epitome of a kind of boxing that kind of went to naught when slick fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr. dominated the ring for quite some time. But with the recent retirement of Mayweather, it's time to give hardcore boxing fans something that will definitely make them sweat in their ringside seats.
If there's one person who knows more than a thing about these two fighters, it has to be Freddie Roach, the current trainer of Cotto, who previously trained "Canelo" for three fights. A report from the Examiner quoted Roach as saying that Alvarez's main weakness is the fact that he is not the most dedicated fighter, seemingly having problems with conditioning during his fights. This is why Roach believes his fight, the current WBC middleweight champion Cotto will break him down easily.
Alvarez, the former WBC and WBA light middleweight champ, took the world by storm when he blitz through competition as a young fighter. But his weakness was exposed by no other than Mayweather in 2013 when the young Mexican was convincingly defeated in the scorecards.
If there's one thing going right for Alvarez though, it's the fact that he's younger. At 25, the boxer went professional at the age of 15. Cotto, on the other hand, is a veteran who everyone thought was already done after suffering defeats against the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather, and Antonio Margarito. But he's still fighting, and winning for that matter.
The 35-year-old Cotto defeated Daniel Geale via 4th round TKO, while Alvarez got a KO victory against the come-backing James Kirkland in May of this year.
