Super Smash Bros. 4 3DS Release Date, Game Modes Shown

Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is coming this Oct. 3 but an earlier Japan release is coming Sept. 13. The game will also be released for the Nintendo Wii U for the 2014 holidays.

The game was first announced during the Electronic Entertainment Expo of 2011 with a trailer unveiling at the E3 2014 earlier this year. The two games will represent the fourth and fifth installment of the franchise.

The gameplay of the Smash Bros. series revolves around up to four players using different characters in a percentage based combat system. Each player can use a variety of attacks to increase the percentage of the other three opponents where they can be easier to knock off from the playing field.

Playable characters for the Super Smash Bros. include a roster of well-known characters from other various Nintendo game series. Among the characters are the brothers Mario and Luigi, Link and Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Samus in her Zero Suit form.

The roster also includes characters from third-party series which did not involve Nintendo. Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog is one such example as well as newcomers Pac-Man and Mega Man from titles of the same name.

The trailer unvieled during the 2014 E3 revealed an interesting number of game modes that can be played with the title, aside from the usual deathmatch between four players.

The game modes are Solo, Smash Run, and Online Smash.

In Solo, players can opt to choose different paths as they proceed along the map and fight characters along the way, depending on which path has been taken.

Smash Run is a 3DS-exclusive game mode where players enter a vast playing field and fight opponents within a 5-minute time limit while collecting power-ups for the chosen character.

Online Smash is a game mode where players can play with their friends over the Internet in a "For Fun" or "For Glory" mode, accumulating stats for each mode as they progress.
