'Supergirl' Season 1 News, Update: Showboss Explains Superman's Absence
Despite the countless references to Superman across all the promo materials including the pilot episode of CBS' new superhero drama TV series "Supergirl," it has been made clear earlier on that Kara Zor-El's cousin will never be a focus on the show.
To clarify the issue even further, executive producer Sarah Shechter sat down with the people from HitFix (via Design & Trend). As explained by the EP, the public had it wrong to think that the network only did "Supergirl" because "Superman wasn't available."
Rather, it is because they think that Supergirl "is such an interesting character. Other than that, the Kryptonite lady is "so under-explored" which gives them an "enormous opportunity" to delve deeper on the character like never before.
And to put it simply, Superman isn't in the show "because it's not about him," Shechter told the media outlet.
"Supergirl" is all about Melissa Benoist's alter-ego and the greater known superhero "is just sort of a shadow in the back of her psyche."
"I think that's the right way to portray him because that's how she experiences it," she went on to say (via D&T).
Even then, the EP promised that viewers will still be able to fully grasp the idea why Kal-El won't be working with his cousin in getting rid of National City's bad guys. In the third episode particularly, it will be revealed what Superman means to the citizens of this country as well as for the rest of the world.
Given such degree of reputation, co-showrunner Andrew Kreisberg said that it is really Kara's intention to be recognised as not just Superman's cousin. Rather, she wants people to think of her the same way that they held regard to Superman.
Regardless of which, TV Line reported that an actor was cast to play as the "body double" for the Kryptonian. This means Superman could only be seen from "a distance and/or partially obstructed and/or never in focus" in the occasion that he makes an appearance on the upcoming CBS show.
"Supergirl" hits the small screen Monday, Oct. 26 at 8:30 p.m. Stay tuned for more updates.
