As said in a statement by Karey Burke, executive vice president programming and development, "Every season 'Switched at Birth' continues to deliver fresh, relatable storylines that tackle important social issues, reflecting what our audience experiences daily.

She also shared that the network is excited to see where Lizzy Weiss will lead the characters of the show next. Weiss is executive producer of the Peabody Award-winning series and works alongside Paul Stupin ("Dawson's Creek") and Linda Gase ("Army Wives").

"Switched at Birth" debuted in 2011 and it follows the stories of two families whose paths crossed after they found out that a hospital glitch resulted to the accidental switching of the two main characters, Daphne and Bay. With the girls already in their teen years, the families try to figure out how to live together amidst the peculiar situation.

The show also touches the deaf culture as part of Daphne's story involves her becoming deaf after a case of meningitis when she was still an infant. Cinema Blend detailed that because of that, the show has really gained recognition and that includes the Peabody Award.
