'Switched at Birth' Season 5 News, Cast, Spoilers: Showrunner Says They Had 'A Million Ideas' for the Finale

"Switched at Birth" ended its fourth season on quite an interesting note. The show made a good decision to make a 10-month jump after Bay and Daphne decided to go on their spur-of-the-moment trip to China. The10-month jump means that a lot of events have occured, including learning Mandarin and getting new jobs. Their life in China didn't continue further though when Bay received a phone call requiring them to go home as soon as possible.

At this point, it seems that the show can go in multiple ways, and fans generally don't have an idea what the next season could bring. Showrunner Lizzy Weiss recently spoke to The Wrap about the future of the show. When asked what seaason 5 has in store for its fans, she shares, "Not everything is fleshed out, but there is a general plan. We had a million ideas [for what the cliffhanger would be], and we may still use a couple of them. There are some stories that I still love and that we may still use."

As for the decision to make the time line jump, Weiss also took the chance to confirm viewers' theories on why it was needed to move past 10 months and the main reason was to give Bay and Daphne ample time to adjust and start over. She explains, "10 months seemed like a long enough period that Bay could become a tattoo artist and pick up some Mandarin, and Daphne could get a job at a clinic. Just long enough that you could start to put some roots in a new country."

Furthermore, some events that had occured in the finale will more likely continue in the new season, such as Craig's return that may cause problems for Kathryn's seemingly perfect life as of the moment. For Eric, his relationship with his son will cause him to make more rash decisions, adding to the fact the he ran way with him. Finally, Toby and Lily may be more focused in the upcoming season, especially now that the baby has entered their lives.
