'System Shock 3' Finally Announced: Shodan Is Back and Possibly in VR

After surprising "System Shock" fans and the rest of the gaming community with a teaser site last week, OtherSide Entertainment has confirmed the much-speculated return of the crazed AI Shodan in a new sequel titled "System Shock 3." The new site also hints at the game possibly coming in VR.

On Dec. 8, OtherSide put up a teaser site with a countdown timer urging fans to wait for Sunday, Dec. 13, when the game was supposed to be revealed. But a member of the RPG Codex forum decided to dig around the site's source code and leaked screenshots of the new game's reveal.

Sunday has come and gone, and OtherSide has finally confirmed speculation of a new "System Shock" game. In a series of tweets, the developer revealed the new game over at its official Twitter account.

"It's official. Look. Listen. Sign up for updates on System Shock 3," one of the developer's tweet said.

The new site's visitors are greeted by a new rendition of Shodan, which is short for Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network. The site also features an audio file where visitors can hear Shodan say, "Did you think I'd forgotten you, insect?"

The site also has a mailing list subscription, but instead of the usual name and email address fields, it will lead visitors to a survey form asking about their preferred gaming platform and their interest in virtual reality gaming, among other things. The survey hints at the possibility that VR support could be included in the upcoming game, suggests IGN.

In addition to receiving updates and promotions, 16 people out of all those who participate in the survey will also get a chance to receive a limited edition print of Shodan.

OtherSide has made no other announcement regarding platforms, release date, or other details of "System Shock 3" yet.
