Team France, on the other hand, has a fourth place finish in the women's world cup and fourth as well during the 2012 London Olympics. They will pose a threat to the US bid since France is steadily improving over the years and now ranked number 3, with expectations to have a better standing at the Rio Games.

Another interesting fact about this year's France contingent is that twelve of eighteen players are from Lyon roster. The said team won its third EUFA Championship title earlier this year for the Women's Champion League.

Meanwhile, both USA and France are coming in from respective wins during the Olympic opener. Team USA won against New Zealand 2-0 on goals from captain Carli Lloyd and forward Alex Morgan. The initial statement reverberates at the Mineirao Stadium in its first match of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Victories prior to the match

Lloyd made the goal to an early lead in the ninth minute before Morgan struck another just 34 seconds into the second half. On the defensive side, Kelley O'Hara, Julie Johnston, Becky Sauerbrunn and Meghan Klingenberg contribute excellent performance help maintain USA its unbeaten record.

Eugenie Le Sommer scored in the 14th minute, Camille Abily added to the lead the third goal in the 42nd, and Amel Majri closed the scoring in the 82nd.
