'Tekken 7' Game Has 2 Million Copies Sold, Passes 'Street Fighter V'

Over two million copies of "Tekken 7" sold since its launch three months ago. The figures surpassed its biggest competitor, "Street Fighter V," in the arcade action-fighting video game genre.

Bandai Namco game director Katsuhiro Harada revealed the sales numbers for "Tekken 7" in response to a Twitter question. A fan asked the developer about the number of copies sold so far and he replied with the figures.

Capcom's "Street Fighter V" launched in the same time period as "Tekken 7." The former, however, only sold about 1.7 million copies since June 30.

The figures are important to Bandai Namco because Harada admitted in an interview with Gamasutra several months back that "Tekken" has been trying to top "Street Fighter" for years.

"We still fight to overcome the shadow of 'Street Fighter,' the legendary game that started the genre," he said. "[We're] also fighting to surpass the specter of Virtua Fighter, another legendary series with many fans who love it."

When "Tekken 6" launched in 2016, Bandai Namco sold 1.84 million copies among console owners. It took the company over seven months to achieve this.

Fans have indeed responded well to "Tekken 7" especially with Bandai Namco introducing more features that go beyond fighting. For fun, gamers' characters can wear crazy props, clothing and hairstyle and gamers can also bowl with other characters in a different player mode. Bandai Namco also promised more DLC surprises, such as the arrival of the character Geese Howard from "Fatal Fury" by winter.

"Tekken 7" is the ninth game in the franchise, which originally came out in 1994. The game's narrative follows the fights between Heihachi Mishima and his son Kazuya outside of the arcade player mode. Their story reveals why Heihachi attempted to kill Kazuya, which was previously hinted in earlier installments of "Tekken."

The game is available for players on PlayStation 4 (PS4), Xbox One, and PC.
