Tesla Model X 2017 News: Safety Issues Trigger Proactive Recall of 11,000 Cars

Tesla is known to be obsessed with safety, as the company showed once again when it issued a voluntary recall for Model X SUVs for possible malfunctions in the back seats.

The notice, which was sent out on Thursday, Oct. 12, covered Model X units that had the second-row seats folding flat. Also the recall covers SUVs built between Oct. 28, 2016 and Aug. 16, 2017, according to Engadget.

The company has been alerted to the issue during the course of internal testing and found that the second-row seat behind the driver has a tendency to lurch forward in a crash, possibly due to poorly adjusted cables. The possible defect has prompted Tesla to do a proactive recall of 11,000 Model X cars, or an estimated 3 percent of sold units out in the roads today.

The company has not yet received reports of accidents or issues from customers regarding the seat, according to Digital Trends. Tesla is concerned, however, and is recalling units all the same to take a look at "a small number of cables in the second-row fold-flat seats" that could be better adjusted.

Owners who turn their Model X cars in to one of Tesla's mobile repair service centers can expect the needed adjusted to be done in as little as ten minutes, and they also have the option of taking their car all the way to a company service center, as well.

The notice issued last Thursday is just another in a string of voluntary recalls that Tesla has been putting out, in a bid to maintain their excellent ratings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The company has called back 90,000 Model S units for suspected seatbelt defects in 2015, followed by an earlier recall of 2,700 Model X cars in 2016 for yet another issue with back seats. They also did a pre-emptive recall of 53,000 Model S and Model X cars just earlier this year for problems they noticed with the parking brake.
