Tesla Model Y News: Compact, 'Economical' SUV to Arrive in 2019?
The Tesla Model Y is still a longshot from hitting the production line, but recent reports have started speculating that a 2019 launch of the highly anticipated compact SUV from Tesla is likely to happen.
It is important to note that Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously spoke about the Tesla Model Y project on several occasions. However, fans of the automobile brand know that they first worked on releasing the Model 3 before starting on the Model Y.
However, while Tesla has yet to provide more details on the Model Y's specifications, several publications have provided rendered images on what the car could look like.
Motor1.com noted that the most recent rendered image available showed the Model Y still with side mirrors. This was contrary to earlier speculations that Tesla would drop the side mirrors and replace them with cameras to help with the drivers' peripheral vision.
On the other hand, the only information that Musk has given so far was the promise that the Model Y would be built on a completely new platform.
Talking to investors in an earnings call earlier this year, Musk said: "I am really excited about Model Y. It's, there's been some criticism, like we should sort of derive it from the Model 3 platform. But I think actually we made a mistake in trying to derive the Model X from the Model S platform."
Meanwhile, Musk's excitement was apparently shared by some automobile enthusiasts. In a comprehensive report on the possible makings of the Model Y, Ben Sullins of the YouTube channel Teslanomics said he expected the Model Y to have better specs than the Model 3 "if Tesla can pull it off."
Sullins pointed out that the Model Y would be "a compact SUV built on top of the model 3 platform offering similar capacity and range as the Model X but for a more economical price."
In the same video, Sullins reiterated that the Model Y should arrive in the market sometime in late 2019 or in early 2020.
